Add or remove sales tax instantly
This calculator works both ways. Use Add tax to find the tax and final price on a purchase, or Remove tax to work backwards from a receipt total to the pre-tax amount — handy for expense reports and bookkeeping. Pick your state to auto-fill the base rate, or enter a custom rate for your exact location.
How US sales tax works
There is no national sales tax in the US. Each state sets its own base rate, and cities and counties often add their own local tax on top — so two towns in the same state can have different total rates. Five states (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon) have no statewide sales tax at all, though some allow local taxes.
How to use it
- Choose Add or Remove tax.
- Enter the price (or the total, in remove mode).
- Select your state to load its base rate, or type your combined local rate for an exact figure.
