Medical Schengen Visa Requirements For Indians

Medical Schengen Visa Requirements For Indians

Schengen medical visas are 'C' category permits that allow individuals to enter Schengen members for up to 90 days within 180 days for medical therapy or treatment purposes. Although normally issued as single-entry type permits, you can also request double or multiple-entry permits under certain circumstances.

Note that if you are accompanying someone seeking medical treatment in the Schengen region, both parties must apply for a visa (medical or national, depending on the length of treatment) in advance. In cases that could last beyond 90 days, additional steps will likely need to be taken, depending on whether the treatment may require over 90 days to complete (D category visa may also apply).

Schengen Medical Visa Requirements For The Application Process?

Although the application procedure for Schengen medical visas is similar to other categories of Schengen visas, the steps may differ slightly depending on your home country and destination country. Below are the main steps followed in applying for one -

  • Before beginning the application for a medical visa, make sure you meet all the necessary criteria and gather all the required documents.

  • First, determine where you will submit your application. Depending on where you reside and your destination country, submission can occur directly with one of the embassy/consulates nearby or through visa application centres (VAC).

  • Fill in the Schengen application form online via VAC or Embassy/Consulate websites, listing medical reasons as the purpose of your trip. Note that certain countries offer online portals where applicants may submit applications directly.

  • Once in Schengen, you must schedule an appointment for document and biometric submission at an Embassy/Consulate or VAC, depending on your country of residence. You can book this through their online facilities, by mail or by phone.

  • Please bring all necessary documents (passport, proof of accommodation, photographs, flight itinerary for your visa appointment, and an application and fee payment to apply to a centre; sometimes, this payment can also be completed online when filling out an application form. As part of the mandatory biometrics requirement for Schengen applications, all applicants must attend one or more appointment centres to submit biometrics.

Who Can Apply For The Eligibility For Schengen Medical Visa?

Not everyone needs or can apply for a medical visa; as a result, if you wish to travel under such a permit, you must fulfil a series of conditions -

  • Your application must be filed in the country in which you reside. If you hold a residence permit in another country, contact its visa issuing authority directly for consideration of an application for visa issuance.

  • Your primary reason for visiting should be receiving medical therapy or treatment, and to that end, a valid passport that satisfies all the requirements is required. To do this, it must be possible to demonstrate both your condition and need for such services.

  • Your funds should cover all expenses during your stay period in the country, or you should have been sponsored by someone who will cover them. If accompanying a patient, be able to demonstrate your relationship with them.

Schengen Medical Visa Fee

Medical visa fees for all Schengen permits are the same, with adults being charged 60 Euros while child visa fees start from 15 Euros. Fees can change at any time without notice due to fluctuations in foreign exchange rates, so before starting an application, you must confirm what amount you owe, as this will change with each application process. In addition to the application fee, there may also be biometric charges, express processing charges (if any), and service charges levied.

How To Check Schengen Medical Visa Status

Tracking a medical visa status should usually be simple. This varies by country; for instance, if your application was made at a VAC, you can utilize their online facilities to keep tabs on its progress - embassies also provide this service; alternatively, you could contact your travel agency and have them track it for you.

Bottom Line:

Embassy or diplomatic offices must verify all supporting documents for visa application. As proof of your trip departure and return, embassies use actual flight tickets or dummy flight itinerary for visa as evidence that can prove your trip before visa officers. They require proof such as air tickets with verifiable flight reservations that can provide documentation to substantiate this trip to them.
